Twitter Down Following A DOS Attack

Twitter went offline around 3hrs ago 3pm GMT. Initial impressions were that they’d had a flux of new users and/or heavy traffic following further media coverage.

It wouldn’t be the first time they went offline this was a fairly regular occurrence as the site grew in the early days.

But indications are that there is something much more sinister behind this outage.

The Twitter status page indicated ta few hours ago that there was a problem initially and that it was being investigated. Two hours later there was an update which announced that the site was suffering a malicious DOS(Denial Of Service) attack and that they were working on a resolution.

The site remains down as I write and Twitter continue to defend against the attack, the API for external Twitter tools will of course also be effected.

Even big sites are not exempt from attacks by crackers and hackers with a Bee in there bonnet it seems.
